DIY Studio

Back in 2010 I built a photography studio in our loft in Boston, MA. It was a really bare space that had originally been built as a set for This Old House. The subfloor was built from cheap wood, acquired at Home Depot, while the flooring was a laminate that was on clearance at Ikea as it had previously been used for a model room. There were two rolls of seamless, white and gray, suspended by a rig constructed from PVC pipes and metal hooks. I don’t remember how much it cost, but it was worth the learning experience as well as the use we got out of it.

The two action shots are from a behind-the-scenes video of one of Jackie’s shoots, more of which can be seen at www.jackiepuwalski.com

Game of Thrones Season 3: “Shit Just Got Real!”

Episode Four of this season, titled “And Now His Watch has Ended”, has been one of the most satisfying and twisted thus far. It is due, in part, to the fact that it has been one of the more eventful episodes.

  • Jaime Lannister loses his sword hand, cries about it, and we actually kind of feel sorry for him.
  • The Nights Watch falls apart completely and Lord Commander Jeor Mormont is murdered by his own men. Sam escapes with his girlfriend and her baby.
  • The Hound is about to be put on trial by Robin Hood and his merry men.
  • Varys shows Tyrion that he’s just as monstrous inside as anyone else and that the wizard who castrated him is now his prisoner.
  • Theon Greyjoy is rescued by Simon from Misfits, who then trolls him by bringing him back to the dungeon.
  • Daenerys Targaryen shocks her advisors/bodyguards by double-crossing Kraznys (a despicable man who’d also been insulting her), having her dragon roast him, revealing that she speaks Valyrian, freeing the slaves, and destroying Astapor. She is now in possession of a throng of soulless machines designed to destroy all in their path as well as aerial flamethrowers.

The best part was Daenerys rising to power whilst showing her intelligence and cunning. She is the dark horse of this war. As the rest of Westeros are fighting each other, the Mother of Dragons is preparing for a wrathful return to reclaim the Iron Throne.

Meg & Dia - “Black Wedding”

You may know Dia Frampton from the first season of The Voice. She’s actually been in an indie band with her sister for a while. I, like many of their fans, was excited to see Dia on the show. Their album Here, Here, and Here is definitely in my top 5. The lyrics are quite clever and playful - some of the best from anyone I’ve ever heard, and she sings with so much raw emotion. You should definitely check them out!
